BHP makes major investment in new central library project / Nov 24, 2022

Saskatoon Public Library (SPL) is pleased to announce a $450,000 investment from BHP to support the creation of a study room at the new central library, which is scheduled to open in 2026.

This is the first major donation announcement for Saskatoon’s new central library.

“We are thrilled to announce this partnership with BHP, which has built a strong global reputation for its commitment to social value and contributing to the communities in which they operate,” said Carol Cooley, CEO of SPL. “This is an exciting milestone for SPL, and we look forward to officially unveiling the BHP Study Room when the new library opens.”

Community consultations held throughout the project’s planning stages confirmed the need for a dedicated study room that is quiet and suitable for tasks that require focus and concentration. The BHP Study Room will be located on the library’s third floor and provide Saskatoon residents with a free and peaceful public space for reading, work and study.

“BHP is pleased to support the new central library, which is being designed with sustainability and reconciliation in mind, and a strong commitment to fostering inclusion and diversity in the community” said Simon Thomas, President Potash at BHP. “We believe that success comes from working in partnership with communities and stakeholders to achieve shared long-term value. We are proud to play a role in bringing this project to life.”

This partnership reflects SPL and BHP’s shared commitment to supporting Saskatoon residents to access the information and resources they need for fulfilling education and enrichment opportunities. The new library is set to be a trusted anchor in the heart of Saskatoon, inspiring lifelong learning and creating community connections.
