Guardian of the Gate

Guardian of the Gate (Prophecy of the Sisters, #2)
by Michelle Zink

The ultimate battle between sisters is nearing, and its outcome could have catastrophic consequences. As sixteen year-old Lia Milthorpe searches for a way to end the prophecy, her twin sister Alice hones the skills she’ll need to defeat Lia. Alice will stop at nothing to reclaim her sister’s role in the prophecy, and that’s not the only thing she wants: There’s also Lia’s boyfriend James.

Lia and Alice always knew the Prophecy would turn those closest to them against them. But they didn’t know what betrayal could lead them to do. In the end, only one sister will be left standing. (goodreads.com)

Release Date: August 1, 2010

I’m going to get the negative out of the way first, and I think I am one of the only people who feel this way and I offer humble apologies to Michelle in advance. The Negative: I hate this cover. I hate the new covers. I loved the original cover for Prophecy of the Sisters and I thought it added so much to the feel of the story itself and had I not already known how much I loved the first book I NEVER would have picked up the books AT ALL had they the covers they have now. I might even go so far as to say I loathe these new covers. And I don’t mean to hurt feelings, I just don’t think they fit the story being told one bit. My one saving grace is that I was lucky enough to get an ARC at TAC (where I got to meet Michelle in person – finally!) and the cover isn’t anything like this. It’s just black with viney-swirls on it and much more appealing to me.

So, there’s my rant on the covers. And now on to the better part of the review – like how much I adore this series.

The Positive: Guardian of the Gate is the sequel to Prophecy of the Sisters, which was haunting and gothic and suspenseful and beautiful. The first thing that struck me with the second book was how beautifully Michelle writes. I had forgotten how much I loved the writing style in PoS as I have read many books since, but once I picked up this book I got the same feeling I had reading the first one. I can’t even describe the feeling, it’s like being underwater and seeing a rainbow and silk red ribbons all flowing in the breeze. That won’t make sense to you but it’s a mish-mash of that to me.

I did not find this book as suspenseful as the first. I was not on the edge of my seat the entire time ready to jump out of my skin at the next creepy surprise but there was this connection to the adventure and the quest to reach the secret island. Mostly I just loved the dialogue and the description – and I HATE description!

What I didn’t like was the romance angle. Not for any reason other than I hate romance angles in books. I think that’s why I tend to like more Middle Grade books better these days, they don’t have that. There’s no love triangle or swooning sighs as the characters get all distracted because they are busy gazing into each other’s eyes or catching their breath all the time over the other. I didn’t mind the new character at all, I thought he was interesting and realistic enough, but I was happier when I was not reading about the romantic crap. This has nothing to do with the plot or writing it’s more my preference in books. I find the romance stuff boring.

I like where this series was taken and where it is going. There were a couple of “reveals” that I guessed fairly early on, but it wasn’t off-putting at all. I tend to have decent hunches about books and movies so it wasn’t something that was glaringly obvious pretending to be foreshadowing. I was pretty proud of my correct hunches though, I’ll tell you.

This book was also as beautiful on the inside as the first one was. I was worried about that what with the cover changes and all. Also? The ARC I had smelled wonderful! Sort of sweet like candy mixed with book. I don’t know what glue they used for binding it, but it just made the book all that much better for me. I sometimes read with my nose it would seem.

I am rather sad that I have another year to wait for the third (and final?) book. I’m not someone who gets a lot of ARCs, I happened to be at TAC and BEA this year and for me that’s more ARCs than I have ever received in my life, but I sort of hope I can snag an ARC of book 3 next year so that I can avoid those dreadful covers. ;) I’m  not being selfish, I am just making sure I can read the book without being totally distracted by the cover. =P

Michelle Zink is now a 100% auto-buy author for me. Sequels are always tricky, but she kept up the beauty of the writing and the story in this second book and therefore passed the test. Her way with words is like a painting coming to life. Brilliant. (HA! HA! I just noticed in my review of PoS I ended with a mention that Michelle might just have become an auto-buy author for me! I guess I just fulfilled my OWN prophecy!)

Rambling Reader: Top Reads of 2009

This was originally supposed to be a Books You Should Buy For Christmas Gifts post, but I ran out of free time (filming and editing all those 12 Days of Christmas videos takes up a lot of time) though I always like to keep track of my favourite reads in a year. Having this blog is handy for that sort of thing. I know every book blog out there is writing a similar post, but I still want to let you know which books I found to be my favourites this year. I am not limiting the books to those published in 2009 – I am including books I might have discovered this year even if they’ve been out for a while.

Maria V. Snyder’s Study SeriesPoison Study, Magic Study and Fire Study (Fantasy Adult / can be YA). These were a find at the start of the year and it had been a very long time since I had been quite so enchanted by a fantasy series. The main character Yelena captured my heart from the first pages. She’s someone I would love to be friends with. Her romance with Valek wasn’t all mush and gush and I found it had depth to it. The side characters in this series were just as fantastic leaving me wanting more and to try and figure out how I could jump into the pages of the book to join them on their quests. Speaking of quests, am I the only one who gets huge cravings for hunks of bread and cheese and homemade stew while reading fantasy books? Because I do. I have to run out (aka, have my husband run out) to the store get rolls of some sort, maybe paté and a hunk of cheese so I can snack while reading. I am so easily swayed by food in books.

Michelle Harrison’s The 13 Treasures (MG) – This was a daring purchase on my part as I ordered it directly from the UK after months of waiting for it to show up on a Canadian site. It was possibly one of the best book decisions I have ever made. Thirteen year old Tanya can see faeries, though that can get her into a lot of trouble and she’s not supposed to talk about it. Her grandmother’s house and grounds was so vividly described that I longed to hop in a plane and travel all the way to England to try and find it. Houses in England always seem so much more exciting than here in Canada. They are also all named, which is just cool. I was lucky enough to befriend the author this year and one day I’ll get overseas and meet her! Meanwhile she kindly agreed to participate in a 5 Questions interview which I posted with my review.

The 13 Treasures will be released in April 2010 in North America with a completely different cover – which I know exists somewhere though it’s not on Goodreads yet!.

Eyes Like Stars -Théâtre Illuminata, Act I by Lisa Mantchev (YA) lived up to all the hype it was getting on the internet. I got it mainly because of the cover and the fact that there were faeries. This book started off a little confusing but you quickly got into the groove of the story and understood the way things work in Bertie’s world – where classic fictional characters come to life. I bought this book in hard cover (since that seems to be the ONLY way Young Adult books are released these days!) and was very  happy to find that I did not waste my money and that I didn’t wait a whole year or more for it to have come out in paperback. Buy this book. It is so worth is.

Yet another book that lived up to it’s hype is Prophecy of the Sisters by Michelle Zink (YA). This was a book I hemmed and hawed about buying because it was in hard cover as well and I wasn’t all that certain that I would like it. When I discovered that it was “only” $19 I ended up adding it to my pile on a shopping trip. I devoured this book like it was the last piece of birthday cake that my mum made! Not only was the story gripping, gothic and creepy the actual inside of the book was pretty! I am such a sucker for aesthetics. I was frustrated to learn that this was not a stand-alone story however. So I warn the rest of you now who have not read it – there are two more books on the way! (At least?)

One of my most exciting surprises of the year was a book by an author that I adore in the Fantasy genre, Kate Forsyth. The Puzzle Ring is not yet available in North America and since I had discovered The Book Depository, I decided to order her two YA/MG novels because I was tired of waiting for them to show up here. I might even go so far as to say that The Puzzle Ring was my most favourite read of the year. I felt like I was in a magical land, like waking up to find you’re a Disney Princess or something. Even the book itself FELT whimsical and I can just stare at the cover for hours. I loved the characters, the setting, the plot. I wanted to live this book. I wanted to be a part of the pages, the story, the paper. I am beyond thrilled that I decided to order it.

And last but not least is Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl (YA). And no, I am not adding any of these books to the list because everyone else has said they were great. I honestly loved this book.  I was worried about buying this book, but I had to. I mean, look at that cover! Also, I thought this book was about faeries, and I must own everything faerie. I was surprised to find that it wasn’t – it’s more about witchcraft in a way, which is fine because I am a witch-girl rather than vamp or were-girl. This is a 600+ page book that doesn’t read like it’s a 600+ page book. I read it cover-to-cover in under 5 hours (I’m a fast reader) and I don’t recall any part of the book being slow. I didn’t put it down because I needed to know what was going to happen. I was so curious about the mystery myself and I felt like I was trying to solve it on my own. This is one excellent book – and well written! The writing is even more beautiful than the cover.

I know many of you have seen most of these books on other sites and lists as being MUST READS! I promise you that I have included these books here only because I found them fantastic on my own and feel that they are worth promoting to the world. I’m even taking deep breaths and leaving this at 6 books (I hate even numbers. Don’t ask.) because they are the cream of the crop in my mind for 2009. Oh, wait! It’s not really 6 books is it? It’s NINE – because I included all 3 of The Study Series. Well, I feel much better about that. (Shush!)

Other books that I felt should be gifted (and therefore did) are: Dark Visions trilogy by L.J. Smith YA), Lament by Maggie Stiefvater (YA), Blackbringer, Faeries of Dreamdark by Laini Taylor (MG) (ok, not something I read in 2009, but it is still fantastic and the sequel came out this year.)

Prophecy of the Sisters

Prophecy of the Sisters
by Michelle Zink

Do you know what this  book should have? A big ol’ WARNING THIS IS NOT A STAND-ALONE NOVEL!! written on the first page. Maybe in neon and if they can swing it, flashing. Because I thought this was a stand-alone novel and well, boy was I shaking my fist in consternation at anything and anyone when I was done reading.

I didn’t really know what the book was about, I have to be honest. I would see it mentioned on other blogs, people receiving ARCs and people waiting for the release and I sort of skimmed the summary, but even though something about the posts made me think, “Ooooh, this book sounds GOOD!” I didn’t pay that much attention and then when I learned that it was coming out in hard cover, well, I just sort of put it on ignore because I didn’t want to know it was going to be amazing and something I would love because I wasn’t about to dish out the money for a hard cover from an other I have never read before.

And then I saw it in the store, all shiny and silver and I looked at the inside cover flap to check out the price and… well, it was only $1.50 more than the urban fantasy book I was buying in trade format!  So the next trip to the store, after payday, I picked this book up. And then it took me a week or so to read it (I was finishing Dark Visions by L.J. Smith first!) and the first thing I thought when I opened it?

“Oh my gosh! This is so PRETTY!” (I really did exclaim this out loud! And I had to show my husband!)

I am such a sucker for aesthetics.

And then I started reading the story and I was instantly hooked! One of the non-hard cover-related things that made me hesitate about the book was the fact that it was set at the end of the 1800s. I am not a fan of period stories and I was concerned about not liking the story or characters. I was completely wrong!

Michelle Zink is such an eloquent writer and yet the writing is still simple and not flowery. I loved Lia right away and her mysterious evil twin sister, Alice.

The more the mystery of the prophecy surrounding Lia and Alice was revealed the more I clung to the book. It was only as I realized I was running out of pages and that the plot had been getting bigger rather than winding down I started to panic. Nothing was going to wrapped up in a nice little bow. Oh, no! I was running out of pages for that to happen unless Michelle Zink was suddenly going to make a gigantic leap from Author Extraordinaire to Author Who Sucks And Rushes The Ending – I wasn’t going to have any closure to this story!

And now I have to wait a year for Guardian of the Gate and I am wondering if I should have just left buying this book to next year like I had planned! That way I could snag one of the hard covers before they were returned and bought the new book at the same time. This is why you need a warning – pre-planning!!

This was a fantastic book and I am so happy I made the financial plunge and bought it. I will read anything by Michelle Zink from now on! I think she’s an auto-buy just from this first novel!

Out of My Pocket #16 – I am an embarrassment to all booksellers

Due to my book buying addiction I started this  feature on my blog where I post about the book(s) I bought that week. Not something I plan on having every week – though it seems to be turning out that way.  So here’s what I bought this week!

Previous OoMP posts can be found here!

I really suck at not buying books. It’s not even funny.

Dark Visions: The Strange Power; The Possessed; The Passion
by L.J. Smith

Kaitlyn Fairchild has always felt like an outsider in her small hometown. Her haunting eyes and prophetic drawings have earned her a reputation as a witch. But Kait’s not a witch: She’s a psychic. Tired of being shunned, Kait accepts an invitation to attend the Zetes Institute, where she can have a fresh start and study with other psychic teens.

Learning to hone her abilities with four other gifted students, Kait discovers the intensity of her power — and the joy of having true friends. But those friendships quickly become complicated when Kait finds herself torn between two irresistible guys. Rob is kind and athletic, and heals people with his good energy. Gabriel is aggressive and mysterious, a telepath concealing his true nature as a psychic vampire, feeding off of others’ life energy. Together, Rob and Gabriel’s opposing forces threaten the group’s stability.

Then one of the experiments traps the five teens in a psychic link. A link that threatens their sanity and their lives. And Kaitlyn must decide whom to trust…and whom to love.

I didn’t even know this series existed! Once I saw it was coming out I had to get it. I am really hoping that it is better than Night World, which I didn’t like, and more like the Secret Circle trilogy which I worship.

Prophecy of the Sisters
by Michelle Zink

An ancient prophecy divides two sisters-

One good…

One evil…

Who will prevail?

Twin sisters Lia and Alice Milthorpe have just become orphans. They have also become enemies. As they discover their roles in a prophecy that has turned generations of sisters against each other, the girls find themselves entangled in a mystery that involves a tattoo-like mark, their parents’ deaths, a boy, a book, and a lifetime of secrets.

Lia and Alice don’t know whom they can trust.

They just know they can’t trust each other.

I broke my Just say NO! To Hard Covers rule for this one since it was only a dollar more than the trade pb I bought last week by C.E. Murphy. I mean, really, what was the big difference?

Unbound
by Kim Harrison (*swoon*), Vicki Pettersson, Melissa Marr, Jeaniene Frost, Jocelyn Drake

Not all hunters are bound by human laws . . .

Revisiting the paranormal realms they’ve made famous in their wildly popular fiction, New York Times bestselling authors Kim Harrison, Jeaniene Frost, Vicki Pettersson, and Jocelynn Drake—plus New York Times bestselling YA author Melissa Marr with her first adult supernatural thriller—unleash their full arsenal of dark talents, plunging us into the shadows where the supernatural stalk the unsuspecting . . . and every soul is a target.

Get ready for the ride of your life—because the wildest magic has just been unleashed . . . and evil is about to have its day.

Not only does this have a ♥Kim Harrison♥ story in it – these are all authors that are coveted for my bookshelves! I collect each of their books like I need them to breathe. How could I NOT get this the second my store got it in stock?

And finally, I have a confession to make. One that shames me to no end and it’s the first time this has ever happened to me. I can hardly bring myself to admit it outloud, but it’s such an epic fail on my part and makes me a disgrace to all former booksellers out there that I have to.

When I finished Karen Marie Moning’s Faefever I was desperate for the next book because of the extreme cliff-hangery way it ended. Trouble was, Dreamfever was coming out in hard cover. I don’t BUY $36 hard covers (unless they happen to be written by ♥Kim Harrison♥) and because it wouldn’t match my 3 mass market books already on my shelf. But I NEEDED to know what happens. And then Kristi (The Story Siren) was posting her reactions on Twitter as she read it and my suspense just doubled. So when I was in the store on Monday picking up my L.J. Smith book I saw that there was ONE hard cover on the shelf next to the rest of the Fever series. I picked it up, looked at the cover flap and was happy to note that it was *only* $28. So I skipped to the cash (yes, I actually did that) and bought it with my other finds.

I bought the WRONG book!

What I actually purchased was the second book in the series, Bloodfever, which has been in paperback for almost 2 years (I think). And when did I notice this? When I was sitting down to enter my books into LibraryThing and it said “Duplicate ISBN in inventory”. I didn’t see how that would be possible and that’s when I looked at the cover of the book and noticed… oh, crap!

I was so mad at myself! I have never returned a book that *I* have bought in my life. And after 10 years of bookstore experience, I am pretty darn good at books. OH MY GOD! I had to walk back into that store the next day and sheepishly return it. Sadly, they did not yet receive their order of Dreamfever, and sadly it’s $32 but now I have to buy it just to save face. I let my bookstore friends laugh at me and make fun of me as I hid my head in shame while being refunded.

I can’t believe I did that.

True story.
