Random Magic
by Sasha Soren
When absent-minded Professor Random misplaces the main character from “Alice in Wonderland,” young Henry Witherspoon must book-jump to fetch Alice before chaos theory kicks in and the world vanishes.
Along the way he meets Winnie Flapjack, a wit-cracking doodle witch with nothing to her name but a magic feather and a plan. Such as it is.
Henry and Winnie brave the Dark Queen, whatwolves, pirates, Strüths, and fluttersmoths, Priscilla and Charybdis, obnoxiously cheerful vampires, Baron Samedi, a nine-dimensional cat, and one perpetually inebriated Muse to rescue Alice and save the world by tea time.
I’m stop number lucky 13 on the Blog Tour for Random Magic – and I was worried I wasn’t going to be ready! I was thrilled to be asked to join this tour, as I had just requested the book from LibraryThing’s Early Review program. I cancelled that request right away and if you’ll remember – this book came as the best parcel ever to grace my mailbox.
For those of you who check my blog regularly, you’ve probably noticed the lack of posting and book reading. Well, it’s been this way for a while now and I haven’t even really picked up a book and read any of it in over 3 weeks. I was very scared I wasn’t going to have this book finished in time for my stop on the tour. In fact, once I started reading it was even more scared that I wasn’t going to like it.
This book is Different. Different with a capital D and capital all the other letters as well. Different as in Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy-type different. Different as in, The Book You Have to Read For Class That is Fun But Has a Ton of Hidden Meaning That Your Teacher Keeps Making You Write Essays On.
It’s also funny and sarcastic and whimsical and magical.
My main problem isn’t with the book but with my state of mind right now. I can’t seem to focus on anything, let alone something that makes me THINK while reading. I’m having trouble reading a 150 page R.L Stine Fear Street Book, ok? That’s not a rocket science kind of book. So the first chapter in Random Magic terrified me! One has trouble reading when one is constantly referred to as “One” in almost every sentence. One thought, Oh, crap. What has One gotten oneself into by agreeing to read this book?!
But the story became much less confusing and much more fun once that section was over. I liked Winnie and Henry was.. well, ok. Professor Random made me angry (I have issues with completely scatterbrained characters) and the other characters around were, to me, just there.
This is “Smart Book” in my opinion. It took a lot of concentration for me to get what was going on. That’s me though, and that’s one of the reasons I tend to read books that are less smart. heh. I think I shall re-read this book once I am out of this current head-space and health thing, when I am able to read it because I want to and not because I am rushing to get it read while I’m not reading anything because I just can’t get into things because I have to post a review soon! It’s just a case of bad timing on my part and I am sad about that because there are elements of the book I really enjoyed and loved and would have liked to have been able to have been more devoted to the book.
I certainly recommend Random Magic to those of you who enjoy wit and whimsy and zany adventures and British humour.

You can check out the entire list of Book Tour Stops here. (Hmmm, this list says I am #12 and not #13! They lied to me on Twitter!

I think this would make a great Summer Reading List book for high school kids. I know I would have been happy to have had this title on my list – something that wasn’t BORING and it was FUN to READ! Heh.

Honest review.
Random Magic is a book that makes you think. I agree that is was terrible for Prof. Random to send young Henry on the quest to fix a mess that he, Prof. Random, had made – but it was a great adventure – and I think Henry was happy in the end.
I hope you get out of your reading rut – I hate it when that happens. I had one myself last week so decided to read something completely out of my usual genre – and thankfully, that did the trick.

I always appreciate an honest review. I agree with you that once you get past the prologue and the first chapter or two, the story gets interesting. I also agree that there is a lot of hidden meanings in the book. It was a very unique read, definitely full of whimsey.
I hope I didn’t come across as not liking the book – because it’s totally my cup of tea! I really don’t feel like I did the book justice due to my personal issues!
Excellent review
Seriously! Very good.
This book looks interesting. I might have to read it one of these days.
Serioulsy, every time I see that cover I’m struck with the fact that she looks so much like Nicole Kidman. Like spitting image!
Oh how cute! Anything related to Alice in Wonderland tends to capture my attention and imagination right away so I will have to try it.
